California

Does roadless wilderness littered with unspoiled alpines, vast lakes and flowing streams sound like a destination you would like to visit? You may be surprised to learn that you can find this and much more amazing wilderness just a short drive away in an RV rental from California! Many are unaware that they can getaway to quiet and tranquil areas located so close to Los Angeles. The Kings Canyon National Park is just one of these great locations. Situated in the Southern Sierra, you will find just the opposite of what California is so well-known for.

Back to the Basics of Nature

While other national parks in the surrounding area are busy with tourists and have been altered by human development, Kings Canyon National Park is one of the rare areas left where you can enjoy nature the way it was intended to be. Make your way to the top of one of the many peaks and take in the view that extends from over 12,000 feet. Take a look down and you will the tallest General Sherman tree, reaching 275 feet tall. The trunk weighs over 1300 tonnes and a circumference of nearly 103 feet! That's one tree you won't be able to miss! The Kings Canyon National Park is the second oldest national park in this area, dating back to 1890.

Feeling Adventurous?

As your drive up to the park in your RV rental California, you will likely see an arch in the sky. This arch is Mount Whitney, which sits at almost 15,000 feet, making it the highest mountain of all the 48 states. It is also the most frequently climbed peak! The trail runs 11 miles each way, so you can be assured your stamina will be tested. For those looking for a more adventurous route, the High Sierra Trail offers 62 miles of trail for you to journey through.

Wildlife at its Best

If wildlife viewing is your pleasure, you are in luck! Kings Canyon National Park has some of the best locations for spotting a variety of animals. Pick a meadow, and arrive in your RV rental from California at dusk or dawn, and be ready to keep your eyes peeled for black bears, mountain lions, mule deer, pine martens, fishers, wolverines, coyotes, gray fox, bobcats, marmots, raccoons, and much more!

Log Tunnels

Arrive home from your RV rentals California trip and tell everyone you drove through a tree! Originally, Kings Canyon never had a drive-through tree. The Wawona Tunnel Tree, the famous "tree you can drive through", grew in the Mariposa Grove of Yosemite National Park, 100 air-miles north of Sequoia and Kings Canyon. It fell over during the severe winter of 1968-69. Visitors to Sequoia National Park can drive through a fallen sequoia, however. In December 1937, an unnamed sequoia 275 feet high and 21 feet in diameter fell across the Crescent Meadow Road as a result of natural causes. The following summer, a Civilian Conservation Corps crew cut a tunnel through the tree. The tunnel is 8 feet high and 17 feet wide, and there is a bypass for taller vehicles.

A Winter Paradise!

Visiting Kings Canyon National Park is a great RV rentals California destination all year round! In fact, the park offers ample opportunities to ski and snowshoe through heavy snow of the western Sierra. The ski season runs from December through to April. Above 6000 feet, the snowfall averages 200 inches annually providing excellent conditions on Grant Grove, King Canyon's best-known slope. Whichever slope you decide to venture on, you will find over 75 miles of marked trails in the area! So pack up your RV rental from California and enjoy the outdoors!
