Building Oakland International Airport
What was to become Oakland International Airport was started in 1927 and dedicated by Charles Lindbergh. This was the site of many historic flights, including the first US-Australia flight in 1928 and Amelia Earhart's final flight in 1937. Boeing Air Transport (a predecessor of United Airlines) began scheduled flights in December 1927.
In 1943, the airport was taken over by the Armed Forced during the war in order to have a base to the Pacific Islands. All scheduled flights were moved to San Francisco International Airport. After the war, airlines slowly moved back. Again during the Vietnam War, thousands of military passengers came through the airport to go to bases in Southeast Asia. This is when the airport began to handle international flights, changing its status to an international airport.
