Phoenix Car Rentals and Phoenix Sky Harbor Security

California

Making your trip after you leave your Phoenix car rental is one of the most important things an airport does for you. Phoenix Sky Harbor is not any different, and you can make your trip as smooth as possible by following their guidelines before leaving your Phoenix car rental and getting to the airport. With new security procedures put in place all the time, it is best to check with your airline for specific details before you leave.

Liquidate your luggage

In the summer of 2006, it was discovered that terrorists planned to use liquid concealed in common toiletry bottles to destroy an airplane. To make your trip safer, there are new guidelines on liquid. It is best to put all liquid that you don’t need into checked luggage. Anything that you may need on the flight needs to fit into one clear plastic bag. You will need to take this bag out at security for a check. All liquids must be in bottles of three ounces or less and all bottles must fit into ONE quart-size clear plastic bag that zips at the top. Only one bag is allowed per passenger.

Travel with ease

To make your trip smooth, arrive at the airport 2 hours before your flight within the United States or 3 hours before your international flight. Remember that lighters are not allowed past the security checkpoint, so you will have to leave those behind. If you smoke, bring matches. All passengers must remove their shoes before being allowed to pass through security, so Sky Slippers are available for you at all checkpoints to keep your socks clean. These tips can make your trip after you get out of your Phoenix car rental as easy as possible.

Secure yourself

Sky Harbor has been at the forefront of airport security and was one of the first airports to use Backscatter X-ray technology that allows the screens to see if passengers are carrying hidden weapons through their clothes. This has caused some controversy because the cameras essentially show nude images of the passengers, but they were not made aware of it. This technology has been changed a bit to make the images look more cartoon-like, while still being able to identify any dangerous weapons.

Before Arriving

  • Do not pack or carry prohibited items. A current list can be found at www.tsa.gov. If you are not sure whether an item is prohibited, call the airport or leave it in your Phoenix car rental.
  • Leave gifts unwrapped for inspection.
  • Avoid wearing anything that contain metal (such as zippers). These may set off the metal detector and slow your processing through the security checkpoint.
  • Limit carry-on baggage to one item plus one personal item, which includes laptops, purses, and camera cases.
  • Identify all bags with ID tags.
  • Bring government-issued photo ID for any traveler over 18. No exceptions: you will not get a boarding pass.
  • Allow for extra time during the busiest travel times, such as the holidays and spring break. You will need extra time to get to the airport, to park your Phoenix car rental, and to check in.

At the Airport

  • Do not watch other people’s luggage. This cannot be stressed enough. Also, never leave your own bags unattended.
  • Take off all outerwear (jackets, blazers, etc) and place in a bin at the security checkpoint. Also put any laptops in a bin, separate from their carrying case.
  • Remove all metal items such as jewelry, coins, cell phones, etc. in a carry-on bag or in the bin to save time at the checkpoint.
  • Always have your ID handy. You may be asked to present it at security and again when boarding the plane. Although it may seem like a nuisance, remember it is to make the plane safer for everyone by ensuring those who purchased a ticket and checked in actually get on the plane.
  • Do not joke about sensitive issues such as possessing a firearm or a bomb. Do not mention the word “terrorist”. Security is trained to react when they hear those words and it may result in jail time or fines.
