RV Rentals and the San Diego Zoo

California

“If I could walk with the animals, talk with the animals…” In a way, you can! If you are planning on visiting sunny San Diego, California during your upcoming Rent4Less RV rental vacation, then you won’t want to miss the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park. Located at 2920 Zoo Drive in Balboa Park just north of downtown San Diego, the San Diego Zoo is considered to be one of America’s best zoos and also one of the largest, most progressive and active zoos in the world. Like the San Diego Zoo, the Wild Animal Park is a nonprofit organization that is active in conservation and species preservation efforts. What’s more, the Wild Animal Park, located at 15500 San Pasqual Valley Road, is just 35 miles north of the San Diego Zoo. So when you’re finished exploring the Zoo, just hop into your RV rental and cruise on up to the Wild Animal Park for a “safari-like” experience on the Bush Line Railway.

History

The San Diego Zoo has its origins in exotic animal exhibitions that were abandoned after the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. The Zoological Society of San Diego was founded in 1916 and in 1921 a permanent tract of land was set aside in Balboa Park where the Zoo was built and has remained there ever since. If you decide to visit the San Diego Zoo during your Rent4Less RV rental trip, you can feel confident that your admission fees are supporting a worthy cause: the Zoo uses the income from its attractions to look after its animals and to continue zoological science, education, and conservation.

Zoo Specs

The San Diego Zoo is one of the first of its kind committed to building “cageless” exhibits to provide its animals with the freedom and natural habitat they require. The Zoo is also home to some of the rarest animals in the world, including the world’s largest population of the endangered Giant Panda outside of China. The Zoo lays claim to a wide range of animals, including amphibians, birds, mammals, reptiles, and insects. The animal habitats are specially organized into ten bioclimatic zones ranging from the arctic tundra to the rainforest, and also include native plant species. All in all, the San Diego Zoo is an enormous world of excitement and discovery (covering 100 acres of land), so be sure to find a spot for your RV rental in one of the Zoo’s FREE parking lots and grab a park map on your way inside.

Activities, Dining, and Services: Fun for the Whole Family

Whether you are planning your visit ahead of time, or if you just so happen to find yourself in the neighborhood during your Rent4Less RV rental vacation, the San Diego Zoo is waiting for you! The Zoo is open daily from 9am to 4pm, including all holidays. If you don’t feel like meandering around the Zoo on foot, there are several options available to you. The Zoo offers a bus tour which includes a 35-minute guided tour on a double-decker bus that covers approximately 75% of the zoo grounds. Or, if you desire a bird’s-eye view, the Skyfari Aerial Tram provides you with an airborne journey over the zoo, enabling spectacular aerial views of all the habitats at once. A relatively recent addition to the Zoo, the Balboa Park Miniature Railroad takes its passengers on an interactive 3 minute ride around a portion of Balboa Park. Don’t miss the Sea Lion Show featuring “charismatic” California sea lions and some of the Zoo’s other “star attractions.” Also be sure to check out the Children’s Zoo which features a “petting paddock,” over 30 animal exhibitions and activities designed with your kids in mind.

There are nine dining locations situated throughout the Zoo along with numerous carts and stands where foods for various appetites can be purchased. Or, if you prefer, the Zoo also allows its visitors to bring their own packed lunch into the park with them where various picnic areas are provided.

The San Diego Zoo is a fun-filled destination for the whole family and is certain to be a highlight of your RV rental getaway. With convenient pre-paid ticket packages and more things to do than can be seen in one day, be sure to visit this California landmark.
