A Quick History
The lands between the San Gabriel and Rio Hondo rivers have always been a prosperous area. The deep, rich, alluvial topsoil has benefited residents for centuries, beginning with the Gabrielino or Tongva Indians who used to harvest and hunt in these quarters. Missionaries entered the San Gabriel Valley between the 1770s and the 1830s along with Spanish soldiers. They named this rich area "El Monte", which most people assumes refers to the mountains, but to that era's definition El Monte was likely used to describe "the wooded place" or "meadow and marsh". El Monte has always acted as a place for weary travelers to rest their feet, dating as far back as 1826 when Jedediah Smith and his party decided to camp in the Gabriel Valley. Permanent residents didn't take up land until about the 1850s when prospectors and immigrant pioneers flocked to the fertile lands of the south. The original settlers were searching for gold, but it wasn't long before agricultural became the main occupation. Improved transportation was made available in 1873 when the first railroad was built through the town. The early 1900's saw a new wave of immigrants, this time due to a Mexican revolution, who headed to California in search for a better future. The following decades brought about much change to the city of El Monte; in the 1920s the Gay's Lion Farm appeared along with 200 African lions which Gay trained for circuses and other performances. Farm profits plummeted during the Great Depression, but recovered nicely when a new influx of occupants appeared in the 1950's. Since then the city has been on an upward swing, attracting visitors from all across the US. El Monte, California may be known as the "End of the Santa Fe Trail" but it should definitely be the beginning of your Southern California vacation!
